Admissions to Sainik School are open for boys and girls. The entrance examination is held for admission to class VI and IX (Boys & Girls) . Students who are between the ages of 10–12 years and 13–15 years respectively on 1st July of the year in which admission is sought are eligible to take the examination. For admission to class IX, boys and girls should be studying in class VIII in a recognized school. Admissions are made strictly in order of merit only in classes VI and IX.
Admissions will start from the academic session 2020-2021 in a phased manner. For the smooth implementation of this directive, the ministry has directed all concerned authorities to ensure the availability of necessary infrastructure as well as sufficient female staff in Sainik Schools. This decision aligns with the Government's objective towards gender equality, greater inclusiveness, and enables greater participation of women in the armed forces. It also strengthens the “Beti Bachao Beti Padhao” motto.
